Tips for preparing your quilt for top for longarm quilting
When you send your quilt to us for longarm machine quilting, it means that you have finished your quilt to a standard that allows for the best quilting results we can achieve. Does your quilt have ripples or extra fullness in the borders, bias or triangle seams that have grown bigger, or blocks that need resetting, is it flat and square? Every effort is made to enhance the beauty of your quilt, however quilting miracles cannot conceal construction issues. We endeavor to ensure that your top, bottom and sides of your quilt are parallel, that blocks ans sashings are lined up in even rows etc. If there is extra border fullness, we will try to evenly distribute that fullness so it’s concealed as well as possible. *Tip: Try laying your quilt top on a carpeted floor and smoothing out to check if it lays flat.
We use and recommend Australian made Matilda's Own 60%wool 40% polyester, in both 2.4m and 3.1m widths to suit even the largest quilts, it is pre-shrunk, has a subtle loft and is light weight yet warm for those cold nights when you just want to snuggle up. We have quality batting available for your quilt at competitive rates, saving you money by not having to post bulky heavy batting to us. Consider what batting will best suit your needs. Some battings types weigh more than others so this must be considered for large bed quilts. Polyester is great for kids quilts as it can take being washed and dried often and is low allergy. Thin batting like bamboo is lightweight and drapes well, but can be unforgiving for some quilt designs. Batting with loft can help conceal imperfections. 100% pure cotton batting shrinks 2% after washing, giving an authentic antique look to your quilt.
We use only the highest quality thread, our professional reputation depends on this. We use and recommend various cotton and polyester blends that withstand wear, do not fade or shrink and are colourfast when washed, we DO NOT use the cheapest and weakest threads to keep our prices down. We do not accept thread from clients for quilting their tops, so please do not include any thread with your quilt.
We have quality 100% cotton backing fabrics available at competitive rates in a range of popular colours and prints to suit your quilt top, saving you money by not having to post backing with your quilt top. Batting and backing need to be 6-8 inches larger than the quilt top, we need at least this amount to work with and "squared off"; that the sides, top and bottom are straight and are square. Quilt stores do not always cut a straight across line (at 90 degrees) on their backing fabric and batting, so take the time to check that both really are square and trim as necessary. For best results backing should be one piece and 100% cotton, avoid polyester blends and bed sheets. Invest in the best quality backing you can afford. We cannot ensure that a pieced backing will be finished without pleats so please talk to us about what works best. Each layer is mounted on the quilting machine separately, so please do not baste or pin the quilt layers together.
If your border is pieced, stitch a scant ¼” around the outer edge of the quilt top, so it won’t show after the binding is done as your quilt top will be lightly tensioned during the quilting process, and this will prevent the edge seams from coming unstitched. Trim excess seams or points that can cause undesirable lumps.
Eliminate loose threads that can show through the quilt top or backing especially on light fabrics.
Press seams flat from reverse side, then press front of quilt well. Good pressing helps create a perfectly finished quilt with straight seams and minimal fullness.
Place a safety pin at the head end of the quilt. Some quilting designs are one way and we need to know which will be the head of the quilt.
With your quilt, please include your printed Work Order Request, this will have your contact details and all the special instructions for your quilt. Don’t forget to include your choice of quilting design or any special instructions.
We always call or e-mail our clients before we begin a quilt to confirm your quilt has arrived safely and discuss all the details to ensure your quilt will be finished as beautifully as you expect it to be.
This much extra fabric cannot be quilted out.
